John Canning & Co.
A principal with and president of John Canning & Co., David Riccio is a nationally recognized leader in architectural conservation and restoration with over 30 years’ experience.
Riccio’s journey began as an apprentice, with rigorous training under the tutelage of John Canning. Following a syllabus inspired by the esteemed London & City Guilds, Riccio completed an intensive 6,000-hour program, which immersed him in the meticulous techniques of 19th-century English and French decorators.
Through continued learning and professional development, the craftsman deepened his expertise in ornamental plastering, mastering the consolidation and stabilization of historic plasterwork and the art of traditional three-coat application. His training in paint microscopy, color, and material analysis enables him to assess the condition of historic finishes and develop appropriate treatment plans.
With a passion for church decoration, Riccio established Canning Liturgical Arts in 2015 to address the nationwide demand for church restoration and beautification. Canning Liturgical Arts is now a recognized designer of decorative finishes in ecclesiastical art and decoration.
As a leading expert in architectural conservation and restoration, Riccio has helped shape some of America’s most famous buildings, from the Virginia State Capitol to Radio City Music Hall. To him, his career is much more than just a job—it is an undertaking to sustain and grow the craft of architectural conservation. In a world that often prioritizes speed over quality, this master artisan reminds us of the beauty and significance of traditional craftsmanship.
