ICAA National Announces Annual Ross Award Winners
The ICAA (Institute of Classical Architecture & Art) recently announced the six winners of their annual Arthur Ross Awards. The winning architects and designers exemplify excellence nationwide (and internationally) in work done in the classical tradition.
The winners — Hugh Petter, Brockschmidt & Coleman, Hank Silver, Craig Bergmann Landscape Design, the New York Landmarks Conservancy, and Clive Aslet — were honored with a dinner on Monday, May 12 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York.
The awards are named after Arthur Ross, a prominent American businessman and philanthropist of the twentieth century known for his contributions to the arts. Read on to learn more about the winners of the 2025 Ross Awards.
Hugh Petter
Architecture
Director of ADAM Architecture since 1997, Hugh Petter is a traditional architect and urban designer who, in 2024, gave the ICAA's annual McKim lecture, “The Value of Tradition, a Personal Journey.” He's known for works like the Oval for Surrey Cricket Club in London, the restoration of the Chettle House in Dorset, and, pictured below, Nansledan, a 4,000-home mixed-use urban extension known by the British government as the blueprint for new urban developments.
Brockschmidt & Coleman
Interior Design
With offices in New York City and New Orleans, firm Brockschmidt & Coleman designs interiors that bring a modern sensibility to traditional spaces and historical references. Owners Bill Brockschmidt and Courtney Coleman emphasize traditional detailing, proportion, materials, and craftsmanship in spaces that are timeless yet still unexpected. They've designed projects from coast to coast and as far away as Bermuda and Europe.
Hank Silver
Artisanship & Craftsmanship
For the last two years, American timber frame carpenter Hank Silver has worked on restoring the medieval roof framing of Notre Dame in Paris. Since 2018, he's worked on other historical restoration projects throughout France as part of Charpentiers sans Frontières (Carpenters Without Borders), including the reconstruction of a 12th-century castle bridge in Normandy and the rebuilding of the chapel that houses the tomb of Leonardo da Vinci in the Loire Valley. Silver was born in New York City and honed his craft in Vermont.
Craig Bergmann Landscape Design
Landscape
With a landscape architecture firm located in Lake Forest, Illinois, Craig Bergmann has received many awards for his preservation installations over the years. He's the editor of the book Midwestern Landscaping, and he and his work have been featured on PBS television series The Victory Garden in 1998 and on HGTV’s Gardener’s Journal, and in publications like House Beautiful, House & Garden, Traditional Home, Midwest Living, Fine Gardening, Horticulture, and Chicago Magazine.
New York Landmarks Conservancy
Stewardship
For more than 50 years, the New York Landmarks Conservancy has been dedicated to preserving New York's built environment. Their early efforts included finding new uses for the former Alexander Hamilton Custom House at Bowling Green, while more recent projects have included preserving buildings on Ellis Island's south side and providing grants and no-interest loans to preserve Harlem religious and cultural landmarks.
Clive Aslet
Board of Directors Honor
Throughout his 45-year career, writer and editor Clive Aslet has championed the classicism and its architects. He's the publisher of Triglyph books, which he founded with photographer Dylan Thomas and which publishes architectural books on practitioners like Hugh Petter, Michael Imber, and Oliver Cope. Aslet spent almost 30 years at Country Life magazine, first as a writer before becoming editor and later editor-at-large. He's written over 30 books, his most recent of which, King Charles III: 40 Years of Architecture, came out in May 2025.
