A part of our TRADITIONAL BUILDING series of stories and podcast interviews, we spoke with Steve Hendricks of Historic Doors who, with his team of skilled millwork building artisans, makes period authentic exterior doors as well as interior moldings. "Our work has ranged from wood doors for a treehouse, to a clock tower on an old school," Hendricks explains.

Steve talks about the intersection of the craftsperson's hand and the use of modern machinery. "Every piece of wood is touched by our craftsperson's hand and guided by his eye. And every project is attended by this craftsperson from start to finish, whether we're using hand-tools or CNC cutting machines."

Exterior doors make a statement about the buildings' purpose and context. When replicating historic doors Steve Hendricks explains the research that precedes a design and cites his sources for ideas and inspiration. " Classical doors should have 'firmness, commodity and delight,' or put another way,  durability, utility and beauty."

Listen in with Steve Hendricks, who combines his love of history,  with classical design principals and building craft skills to produce authentic millwork for traditional buildings. "There is pride and satisfaction which comes from making things by hand."
