For a Mediterranean-style house on the water in Palm Beach, the Ludowici green glazed tile roof is a defining architectural feature. Architect Richard Sammons of the renowned firm Fairfax and Sammons took great care to
specify well-crafted, robust and authentic materials so that this home would grow more beautiful over time.

The house, known as ‘Il Cortile,’ has a plan which centers around a courtyard. The exterior is a stucco finish with dimensional limestone details including stone portico and quoins, wrought iron window grates, painted mahogany
wood windows, doors, and shutters, limed cypress rafter tails and Ludowici green gloss roof tiles with flat pans and barrel caps.

The entry to the house begins through entry piers into a motor court laid with Roman brick pavers in a herringbone pattern. Upon passage through the stone portico and cypress wood entry doors one enters an open-air vestibule with an axial view through the entry loggia, the central courtyard, the pool loggia, the pool deck and onward toward a view of a lake to the east.

Richard Sammons explains, “the intent was to design and construct a house appropriate in scale and character and to ensure that all aspects of the house were authentic. Nothing is more authentic or rich in character than the Ludowici clay tile roof.”

A jury of design experts agree. Il Cortile won the 2019 Stanford White Award for best new residential design over 5,000 square feet, bestowed by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art in New York.

“Place is important to us," Anne Fairfax explains. "The climate, history, the building materials, the precedents of building culture…all compose the building blocks which inform the design process. We are inspired by the classical tradition.”
