Episode 39: Modern Traditional Architecture with Thomas Kligerman

Thomas A. Kligerman, architect, author, educator, and architectural historian, has published a new book with Monticelli Press titled SUMMER by the SEA. Much of Kligerman's design work is classically inspired, coastal houses in Rhode Island, Maine, and Massachusetts. His book draws from his knowledge of this northeast region, and his childhood memories of summers spent on the rocky coast of Weekapaug, Rhode Island.

"During my summers in Rhode Island, I learned that buildings are layered with history, memories, and textures," Kligerman tells us. "And that shingle style cottages are best with expansive porches. Whether the Cape Cod style or Modern, all should blend harmoniously into and capture nature. They are never just 'structures.'"

Kligerman Architecture & Design is widely recognized for residential architecture that conveys a sense of place, is finely crafted, and has an emotional connection to landscape and memory. "Several of the houses I talk about in my book have been lived in for generations—built with local materials by the great grandfather's own hand."
