Your original historic millwork has set a high standard by extending the cost/replacement cycle to a century or more. Weston Millwork Company defines value as a millwork product that matches not just the look of period work, but the lasting value and durability of that historic work as well. They have developed a production environment that supports this simple goal in every detail. Sure Bill Hewitson of Weston Millwork Company loves his restored, period sash and door making machinery, but that is not the reason that he runs them in his shop. These industrial age production machines are quicker to set up than modern machinery are thus very efficient for producing the short runs of custom reproduction millwork that are the specialty of WMCO. In addition, they contribute to a total work environment that models the work and methods of the period artisans for accurate reproduction of historic work. Weston Millwork has recently purchased the historic 1856 Weston Mill that they have been located in for the past twelve years and for which they plan a restoration and expansion to better serve their customers. WHY LUMBER DOESN'T LAST Ten years ago, you replaced a 100-year-old window with a new wood window and now you find rotten spots in the wood. What happened? Today's second growth lumber fails because it lacks the dense ring development of the old, slow growing, first growth trees that produced the lumber for the original, historic millwork. That is why Weston Millwork Company recommends not only that you use material highly selected for grade and density for building historic reproductions, but that all exposed wood be treated with wood preservative. No matter how meticulous, craftsmanship is wasted if the millwork fails to endure. Consider the resources below for durable environmentally friendly (also known as"green") reclaimed or recovered lumber. Due to the nature of the salvage and reclamation business, no one vendor can have a permanent supply of any product but by diligent inquiry from several sources, it is possible to find suitable material |
