Peter LaDochy / MFA Design Group

Peter LaDochy creates public art from colored cut glass. His mosaic creations in San Luis Obispo County and throughout California reveal his handiwork. His art graces Morro Bay library's west side, Grover Beach community center, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Atascadero, St. Patrick's Cathedral in Arroyo Grande.

* I must connect to the culture that spawns the art, * he says. * Public art must speak to the culture, and socio-political aspects of it. * What then takes place is a mingling of his visual language with images invented by another culture.

A phenomenon that seems to accompany Peter Ladochy's art is the beautiful byproduct of goodwill that crops up when his projects are undertaken. The physical mounting of a mosaic was undertaken by several caring members of the community, operators of large cranes and thousands of dollars. Students at Cal Poly glued glass tiles onto huge cartons at their homes, and brought them back to be incorporated.

When Ladochy takes on a project, he aims to bring out the hidden layers of ethos of the culture in question. Musing, he says, * It's good to work for institutions, be they churches, corporations or cities. They are slower than artists (meaning not as progressive), but they love growth of marvelous ideas. They can be won over. *
